<image:title>Team Bios - Alyssa Sperry Bertrand - Alyssa (Sperry) Bertrand holds a master’s degree in Global/International Studies from the University of Oregon and a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and History from Washington State University. From 2016 to 2020, her research explored Jamaica’s salt industry, focusing on the economic, cultural, and historical significance of salt across the island's diverse communities, including its ties to Rastafari and Maroons. Her work is featured in Salt in Eastern North America and the Caribbean (University of Alabama Press, 2021), Women Who Changed the World (ABC-CLIO, 2022), and "Eating Jamaica: How Food is Used as a Tool to Create and Reinforce Cultural Identity" (World History Connected, Vol. 18, No. 1, 2023). Alyssa now lives in Oregon with her husband, Josh. She maintains strong ties to Jamaica through the lasting friendships and family connections built during her research. Having married into a Jamaican family, she continually celebrates the island's culture and history through storytelling and cooking—including making a mean jerk chicken and beef patties, both Jamaican-approved!</image:title>

<image:title>Team Bios - Rosemary Rehm - It’s very close, but we can polish a couple of spots to make the flow and rhythm feel a bit tighter while keeping all the details completely intact: Rosemary enjoyed a fulfilling 40-year career in education and family support services across the greater Boston area. As a first-generation German-American without extended family nearby, her life shifted when she spent five years providing end-of-life care for her parents in New Hampshire. In between caregiving, she filled her time gardening, tending neighbors' horses, and working on a goat farm. She later moved with her husband to a co-housing community in Crozet, Virginia, where she stayed connected to agriculture by working in an apple orchard and managing livestock. Her family is spread between NYC—home to her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson—and Boston, where her son, daughter-in-law, and "grand-puppy" reside. Rosemary applied to the Peace Corps shortly before COVID-19, putting her plans on hold until September 2022, when she was called to serve in Jamaica. Her six-person cohort, affectionately nicknamed "Six Love," was the first group back on the island, split between Agriculture and Education. Placed in the rural Blue Mountain community of Woodford in Saint Andrew, Rosemary worked alongside local farmers and spent her free time hiking through nearby Holywell National Park, a favorite hidden gem. Working with the community was a deeply rewarding experience, and having left a piece of her heart in Jamaica, she plans to keep going back. Since her Peace Corps service, Peri has transitioned into London’s legal sector. She holds BAs in International Relations and Archaeology from Boston University, an MA in Cultural Heritage Studies from University College London, and a Graduate Diploma in Law, and is currently completing her LLM.</image:title>

<image:title>Team Bios - Sue Miles - Sue Miles, a native of Buckingham, Virginia, is a retired high school counselor, former VISTA Volunteer in adult literacy, and former Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica (1979–1983). During her service, she worked as a Community Developer in Portland Parish before becoming Program Coordinator for the Jamaica Federation of Women in Kingston. In 1982, she was named Peace Corps Volunteer of the Year for Jamaica. Since retiring, Sue spends several months a year in Long Bay, Portland—the village where her Peace Corps journey first began. She remains actively involved in local community service, with a strong focus on youth development, serving as a Director of Chesscot United Youth Services, Ltd., and collaborating with a local Community Association. Over the past five years, Sue has also been advocating for a young child in Portland living with spina bifida. Thanks to support from private donors, an international agency, and Shriners Children's Hospital, the child is now walking with the assistance of braces and a walker.</image:title>

<image:title>Team Bios - Joel Matheson - Joel served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica from 2018 to 2020. He was based in St. Thomas (undoubtedly the best parish on the island!), where he worked alongside smallholder farmers and local community groups in the agriculture sector. During the pandemic, he organized the Hayfield Accessibility Ramp Project, a grassroots fundraiser partially supported by Friends of Jamaica. That connection led him to join the Friends of Jamaica team in 2022. Joel holds a Master’s degree from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor’s degree from Boise State University.
